Captains Drive In & Centenary Flag Raising Ceremony

Over one hundred members turned out on Sunday 2nd March 2008 to witness the Clubs one hundredth “Captains Drive In” Ceremony and to mark the special occasion a special Centenary Flag Raising Ceremony.

The Centenary Captain, Mr Tony Welch was heralded on to the first tee with the swirl of bag pipes where he was joined by the President of the Club, Mr Geoff Holden, the Lady Captain Mrs Jean Nutter and Councillor & Mrs John Smith who represented the Mayor & Mayoress of Bury..

The Captain took his place on the Tee and made his first drive as Captain, which marked the start of the Clubs Centenary Year.

Members then made there way to the Putting Green where two of the longest standing members, Mr Derry Fletcher & Mr Mert Meachin lowered the Club Flag to mark the closing of the clubs first One Hundred Years. In his short speech Derry Fletcher made reference to some of the clubs history but especially the close comradery that developed within the club.

The Captain & Lady Captain then planted a Centenary Oak Tree as a lasting memorial to the Centenary Year.

Councillor & Mrs John Smith laid a wreath and led the membership in a minute’s silence in memory of members lost over the years.

The Captain & Lady Captain then raised the Centenary Flag to mark the official start of the Centenary Year celebrations.

The Captain and Lady Captain closed the ceremony and invited all guests and members to join them for breakfast in the clubhouse.
